Grieve
Settling in to That Which Remains with Notes of:
Ember | Ash | Frankincense & Myrrh
Loss and grief is an undeniable reality in and all around us. It seems like we are collectively facing and feeling the weight of losses and traumas to an increasing measure… both individually and collectively. What in the world do we do with these? Do we even have any space and time for that? We don’t know what to do with it and often society says, move on and press it down. What’s done is done. Our unhealed wounds, ripe for infection, are shoved down from our heart and mind, and move into our bodies. Most of us are holding within us the congested grief of a lifetime of accumulated losses. Contrary to our culture’s norms, we were made to grieve. We need space for our grief.
From Francis Weller in The Wild Edge of Sorrow, “Among the ancient Scandinavian cultures, it was a common practice for those dealing with loss to spend their days alongside the fires that were aligned down the center of a longhouse… Ash speaks to what remains, the barest semblance of what once was. James Hillman wrote, ‘Ash is the ultimate reduction, the bare soul, the last truth, all else dissolved.’ … Without an adequate time in the ashes tending the loss, sorrow mutates into symptoms of depression, anxiety, dullness and despair. We must honor the needs of the soul during times of grief.”
This candle is just a little step towards making room to honor the needs of our soul. Through notes of ash, embers, and frankincense & myrrh, may your soul find space to be laid bare and in that receive the comfort it needs and craves. We are created and called to grieve. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
